Minnesota's long statewide nightmare finally over
Former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) conceded to former comedian Al Franken after losing an appeal to Minnesota's Supreme Court in the months-long litigation surrounding their 2008 Senate race. With the standoff over, democracy is restored to our long-suffering state.
"We have reached the point where further litigation damages the unity of our state," Coleman said at a news conference. "I congratulate Al Franken in his victory in his election."
Now that Al Franken has been officially declared the winner in his U.S. Senate the Democrats will have 60 votes. That means the Republicans cannot filibuster them.
Franken is the 58th Democrat in the Senate. The Dems have not had that many sitting senators since 1981.
